On Monday, Maryland senior Senator Ben Cardin (D) announced his plans to retire after his current term ends in 2024, capping his tenure in the Senate at three terms.
Serving for nearly two decades, Sen. Cardin’s announcement to not seek reelection in 2024 creates a potential opening for Democratic leadership of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship. The state of Maryland has not had a Senate vacancy since 2016, creating an opening for Democrats and Republicans alike.
Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan – who, along with his lieutenant governor, is the only Republican to have won statewide office in Maryland in 20 years – is reportedly considering a run, however, firm positions and plans have yet to take shape ahead of the general election primaries.
